Spinal care during winter months
and what you should consider to avoid injuries
During the winter months there’s several things to consider when it comes to spinal and joints care. Not only is the weather getting colder, but there’s also a tendency to spend more time indoors and likely having less physical activity.
This can lead to worsening of symptoms like, joint ache, lower back and neck pain, reduced mobility and others. There’s also the aggravated risk of falls and breakages that can significantly impact your health.
Chiropractic care may support you managing your lower back pain, sciatica pain, improve your posture to avoid muscle stiffness as well as joint pain relief.
Keeping active in the winter months can be very beneficial for your overall health, improving your cardiovascular system, as well as keeping your joints mobile. It can help improve your mood, boost your energy level and reduce fatigue, support your immune system whilst also helping to regulate your mood.
You’re less likely to suffer from joint pain and muscle stiffness if you keep some level of activity in your routine. Keeping an activity level will help maintain your mobility and spinal segments, your muscles around the spine strong and stable and will also help maintain balance and reduce fall risk on icy surfaces.
Maintaining your mobility healthy throughout the winter can be challenging, but with some of our suggestions it may become easier. It will be important to keep your pain level to a minimum. Consider standing up more often when indoors. As the cold approaches, we tend to seat more and spend more time cozying up to the telly with having a warm drink. Consider doing often breaks to use the loo, make a drink or simply a small walk around the house.
Having a daily routine to go for a small walk can also be an option. Consistency is better than intensity, so even if your walk seems small, consider doing it often rather than straining yourself.
With the higher risk for falls over these cold months, exercises to strengthen your core should be in your routine. Having a stronger core will reduce your risk of falls helping you maintain balance and stability even in riskier situations – like the floor being slippery or icy.
During this time of the year, along with some routines of the season, it is normal to spend long hours driving to visit family, seating for longer periods of time, have poor posture due to wrapping gifts and even strain your back and shoulders due to carrying heavy weights like shopping bags and groceries.
